The old town square lays in the very center of Spandau. In this historical atmosphere, visitors to Spandau's old town center are rewarded with an abundance of shopping possibilities. The entire area is a "Fussgängerzone" or pedestrian area where automobiles are not permitted, thus ensuring pleasant, stress-free strolling. The area also offers a wealth of cafes and restaurants for when your shopping is finished or when it's time to take a break.
Visitors with historical interests are well advised to view Spandau's Reformationsplatz. Here are many points of interest from the Middle Ages, including St. Nikolai Church with its monument to Elector Joachim II, as well as the imposing statue of the Baron von Stein. Finally, St. Nikolai Church also possesses archaeological cellars that are well worth taking a look at. Adjoining the church is Carl Schurz Street, which runs directly to the old Spandau City Hall. In the same area is Berlin's only surviving private house from the Middle Ages, known as das Gotische Haus or "the Gothic House".
Spandau's impressive Christmas Market is also located within the old town center. Well known outside of Berlin's borders, over a million people come each year to visit the over 500 various Christmas-oriented stands and market stalls. The Christmas Market is open all along the old town center throughout all of the weeks of Advent, spanning an area between the City Hall and St. Nikolai Church. During this time the entire old town is transformed into a veritable Christmas City that is not to be missed.
